WELCOME TO PORTLAND!
It's a city of roses and rivers. A city with water coming down from the sky and up from dozens of fountains. It's a town that will surround you with friendly people and breathtaking natural beauty. The kind of place that you can call home and feel good about it. Once you've experienced Portland, you'll understand why it's one of America's most livable cities, year after year. But you may need a little help to get started.
This booklet has been prepared especially for you. It is designed to get you started on finding your home in Portland. That means a lot more than just shopping for a house or apartment. You'll need to know about shopping, doctors, schools, recreation and more before you can start enjoying your new life in the Pacific Northwest.
I would browse through this booklet and jot down the name of any area that looks interesting to you. Then use the booklet to determine whether or not you're really interested. Think about what is important to you. Schools? Recreation? Style of house?
We've made a lot of information available to you here. We want to give you as much information as we can to help you make important decisions about your move to Portland.
Portland is an easy city to get to know. But, by necessity, we've had to generalize a little while putting this together. We've divided the city into six different lifestyle areas and we show you the predominant or unique housing in each. You should know, however, that it's possible to find any kind of housing in any area. A good real estate agent or relocation expert should be able to help you find exactly the home you want in exactly the area you'd like to live.
The people of Portland are very proud of their neighborhoods. The City of Portland maintains the Office of Neighborhood Associations at City Hall. Each Neighborhood Association works to maintain the livability and quality of their neighborhood. Most of the neighborhoods in Portland mentioned in this booklet have Neighborhood Associations. To get involved in your new neighborhood, give them a call. The Office of Neighborhood Associations will be glad to give you the information by calling (503) 823-4519
THE EARLY YEARS
Portland began as a trading center for pioneer families in the lower Willamette and Tualtin valleys. The fledgling town was awarded it's name as a tribute the the home town of an early settler, Francis Pettygrove, who came from Portland, Maine. Pettygrove earned the privilege of naming the town by winning a coin toss with another settler, Asa Lovejoy, who hailed from Boston. The burgeoning communities of Oregon City, St. Helens, and Milwaukie competed for prominence with young Portland, but as businesses opened in Portland, the trading center flourished with commercialism. California's gold rush of 1849 created a great demand for Oregon products, and Portland's business boomed, its location on the Columbia River proving a valuable commodity.
In 1851 the territorial Legislature granted Portland, population approximately 700, a city charter. A railroad connecting Portland and San Francisco was completed in 1868, and two transcontinental rail lines completed in 1883 and 1884 linked Portland to the East. By 1900 the city's population had soared to 90,246. About that time the city fathers began preparing for the World's Fair, the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905; the success of this exposure for Portland was reflected in another growth in population, measured by by 1910 census as 207,204.
Today the Portland metropolitan area, bolstered for many years by abundance of hydropower resources in the region, has become an industrial center characterized by the diversity of its products.
